Apple MR Headset Rumored to Be Released This Year

by Boaz Feldman

MR basically means Mixed Reality. Apple is rumored to be working on a project codenamed N301- A headset that not only gives digital representation and access to virtual Reality but also Augmented Reality.
But since Apple themselves hasn't confirmed anything, there is no specific release date. Just deductions, rumors, and leaks from various sources, but as some of the leaks from these sources are similar, it is safe to assume there is some truth to the rumors.

Release Date: Late 2022?

To be or not to be? Would the headset be released this year, or as some have said, would it be pushed forward to 2023?
The VR/AR Headset is different from another rumored Apple AR Glasses. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted that the headset would be released towards the end of 2022, with shipments ramping up in the first quarter of 2023.
This is because Apple’s standards are much higher than that of competitors and also due to the complex nature of the designs. Kuo forecasts that Apple will follow up on the 2022 release of the Apple headset with another version in 2024 that will be significantly lighter and also possess a faster processor

Specs And Designs

First of all, what makes this headset unique is that it also incorporates a see-through experience that supports Augmented Reality, unlike the Oculus Quest 2 and PSVR2 Headsets, which are for Virtual Reality only.

The headset possesses body tracking, simulating real-world environments in a virtual space.
It also has exterior cameras and sensors, which means more functionalities like hand tracking and gesture control like typing in the air with a virtual keyboard.
The cameras number 12 with two 8K displays; the sensors are reportedly LiDAR which uses radar to measure distance.

The specs for the cameras and sensors were contradicted by DSCC (Display Supply Chain Consultants), which claims that Apple is making 4000 x 4000 displays with a 1.4-inch diagonal

Prices and Uses

The headset can be used for communication, gaming, and for viewing audiovisual content.
However, Apple has decided it would be a device for taking short trips into the Metaverse and not a device to be worn all day, every day.Reports claim that the headset might be anything north of $3000.
Gaming headsets cost an average of $1000 though Microsoft Hololens 2 is about three times that.
