Unreal Engine 5- Epic Game’s Latest

by Guy Frum

The wait is over! Epic Games have now released Unreal Engine 5, now available to download anywhere.
Users will benefit from a redesigned Unreal Editor, better performance, artist-friendly animation tools, an extended mesh creation, and editing toolset, improved path tracing, and so much more. It also brings a collection of groundbreaking features that allows you to render real-time worlds in high definition.

Epic Games and Its Unreal Engine

The creators of Fortnite, Epic Games Inc., is an American software developer and publisher based in North Carolina and founded by Tim Sweeney in 1991.
Unreal Engine is a game engine originally designed for first-person shooter games but has since been used in different types of 3D games and even in the film and television industry.

The latest edition, released in April, can be downloaded for free, unlike its predecessors, which used a subscription model.

UE5: The World’s Most Open and Advanced Real-time 3D Creation Tool

The two major new features being talked about are the Lumen and Nanite. First of all, Lumen, as its name suggests, is all for the lighting, an illumination solution that allows you to develop believable scenes where indirect lighting adapts immediately to changes in direct lighting or geometry.

Imagine trying to edit a scene where you have to turn on a bulb or open the window in a room now, you don't have to author lightmap UVs, wait for lightmap to bake, or place reflection captures. You can avoid all this hassle by simply creating and editing lights inside the Unreal Editor, and you'll get the final lighting your players will see when the experience you're designing is being run on the target platform.

Nanite, on the other hand, allows you to create experiences with a massive amount of geometric detail. There are also VSMs- Virtual Shadow Maps that allow you to create plausible shadows with reasonable performance costs come in handy when designing large open worlds.

A Next-Generation Console

With great power comes great responsibility. Therefore, with a great console, expectations are high. Gamers demand a frame rate of 60fps or higher, so with Temporal Super Resolution, another mind-blowing feature, it is possible to achieve image quality near 4K resolutions and reduce GPU frame time by almost 50%
